Passports and Visas

Your passport must remain valid for at least six months after traveling. If your passport expires before that, or you do not have a passport, please visit http://travel.state.gov/passport for information on how to renew or apply for a passport. We suggest you apply immediately to ensure your passport arrives in time for travel. Once you receive your passport, sign it in black or blue ink, and complete the emergency contact information section in pencil. Make several photocopies of the signed photo/informational page.

U.S. passport holders with regular passports, who wish to stay in the European Union, Great Britain, Mexico or Argentina for tourist or business purposes for up to 90 days, do not require a visa. For stays exceeding 90 days, and for passport holders of any other country, please contact the consulate of the country of interest nearest you regarding visa requirements.

A passport and visa are required for U.S. citizens traveling to Brazil for any purpose. Brazilian visas must be obtained in advance from the Brazilian Embassy or consulate nearest to the traveler’s place of residence. There are no “airport visas” and immigration authorities will refuse entry to Brazil to anyone not possessing a valid visa.
